Fall Poetry Workshop I 

Aug. 26, 2020 – Sept. 30, 2020
Wednesday Evenings, 6pm - 9pm
$375 for 6 weeks

In this online 6-week workshop at the SF Creative Writing Institute you will find inspiration, play, experiment with new forms and generative exercises, explore the craft of poetry, create and edit new work, share and receive feedback, support, and encouragement in a relaxed, intimate environment. 

We will meet as a group via Zoom each week for lectures and workshopping. Lessons, assignments, and reading materials will be posted online. Students will write new poems weekly for discussion.

This class is open to all levels of writers and all styles of poetry. Whether you’re already a published poet or a you’ve never written a poem, this is an opportunity to establish, re-establish, or deepen your writing practice, find your way onto the page, learn new techniques and forms, and connect to a thriving local writing community.

Fall Poetry Workshop II 

Oct. 14, 2020 – Nov. 18, 2020
Wednesday Evenings, 6pm - 9pm
$375 for 6 weeks

You already know how to write a poem, but you want to reinvigorate and nourish your writing practice. If you’re looking for feedback, community, a reason to write more, a way to break through blocks, and find fresh ideas and inspiration, if you are looking to take your poetry to the next level, write and revise new work, give and receive feedback, and get your work published, this is the class for you!

In this six-week workshop poets will read, write, and explore the craft of poetry through poetic forms such as Ars Poetica, Epistle, Ekphrasis, Persona, and Cento, and experiment with generative revision strategies in a relaxed, supportive online environment.

Poetry III: Contemporary Poets & Poetry

This four-week workshop will explore the craft of poetry through the lens of established contemporary poets— Ocean Vuong, Ben Lerner, Sally Wen Mao, and Sam Sax, using deep discussion of their work as inspiration for poetic experimentation.

The class will include generative writing prompts, close readings of poems, and generous feedback and attention in a relaxed, supportive online environment. All levels welcome.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, join this exclusive one-time workshop to read and write new poems inspired by the timeless themes of love and lust, desire and yearning. 

If you've never taken a class with me, this is a chance to take a taste. Alums of my workshops know just what to expect. This will be all new material, fun generative prompts, sharing and light workshopping. 

Poetry IV: Generative Poetry Workshop

Feb 18 – Mar 25, 2021

Discover, read, write, and workshop new poetry. Each week this class will explore a different poetic theme—the body, rites and rituals, place and home, food and family, dreaming, reflection. 

For inspiration, students will read and discuss a variety of poems from writers offering differing approaches to the themes and then write their own poems. 

Students will receive generous weekly feedback aimed at deepening their craft and pushing their work to the next level in a relaxed and supportive online environment.

I will be taking a short teaching sabbatical during spring and summer 2021.
